Aluminum or Copper
Aluminum or Copper Lightning Protection?
Both Copper and Aluminum materials are manufactured and UL listed for the specific use in Lightning Protection systems.
When to use a Copper System. Copper is used in areas near the Ocean (Salt air) and where Pollution is significant. Copper is significantly more expensive than Aluminum. Copper cannot be used on Aluminum roofs. Copper will last about 40 years in normal conditions. Severe Windstorms (Tornadoes), Hurricanes, and Fire can harm a Copper system and it should be inspected after any of these occurrences.
When to use an Aluminum System. Aluminum may be used in climates that do not contain Acid Rain or Salt. Aluminum is considerably less expensive than Copper. Aluminum cannot be used on Copper roofs. Aluminum systems will last about 30 years in normal conditions. Severe Windstorms (Tornadoes), Hurricanes, and Fire can harm an Aluminum system and it should be inspected after any of these occurrences. Aluminum cannot be used in contact with the ground surface. A transition to Copper must be done prior to coming into contact with the ground.
